Facelift surgery primarily focuses on treating the mid-to-low areas of the face, such as the cheeks, mouth, and jaw. During a facelift, the area where the neck and jaw meet is often tightened, but for more comprehensive neck rejuvenation, the patient must combine their facelift with a neck lift.

What Areas Does a Facelift Treat?
A facelift is a cosmetic procedure designed to reverse signs of aging on the face and neck, such as:
- Wrinkles and creases
- Deep nasolabial folds
- Sagging skin and loose jowls
- Sunken cheeks
- A loss of facial definition
Your typical facelift centers on areas of the mid-face, so below the eyes, down to the jawline. During the facelift procedure, your surgeon separates the skin from the underlying tissues and lifts and repositions the tissues to restructure the face. They can also reposition fat deposits to create a more youthful, contoured result. The skin is then redraped for a natural look, and excess skin is removed.
The results of a facelift enhance part of the neck, namely just below the jawline. When the skin and tissues are tightened, the jowls (hanging skin around the chin and jaw) are also tightened. However, for more intensive neck rejuvenation, patients are better off combining their facelift with another cosmetic procedure that focuses solely on the neck: a neck lift.
What Areas Does a Neck Lift Treat?
A neck lift is a specialized procedure that can be extremely beneficial to some patients, especially when combined with a facelift. As the neck ages, the sheet of muscle called the platysma muscle weakens, which can result in what’s known as neck banding or vertical neck bands. In addition, the skin over the neck also becomes aged and saggy, creating what is sometimes called a turkey neck.
The goal of a neck lift is to reduce these signs of aging, tightening the underlying muscles and loose skin for a youthful result. During a neck lift, your surgeon makes a small incision under the chin and separates the skin from the muscle before redraping and tightening the muscle and underlying tissues and tightening the skin before trimming the excess.
Do I Need to Combine My Facelift With a Neck Lift?
It depends on your specific goals for the procedure as well as your concerns! Patients with minor neck jowling that is primarily located along the jaw may be candidates for a facelift alone. However, if the patient has excessive loose skin that hangs lower on the neck, in addition to neck banding caused by loose neck muscles, a neck lift is ideal.
Combining facial procedures has a few other benefits, as it provides a more natural, cohesive result. If you have a facelift alone yet have severe neck aging, it is an obvious giveaway that you’ve had work done on your face and not your neck. Cohesion and facial harmony are key for a more impactful result for any plastic surgery procedure.
What Else Can I Combine With My Facelift?
Volume loss is a primary cause of facial aging, as collagen production slows and fat deposits shift. A facelift allows your surgeon to tighten muscles and skin and reposition fat into more pleasing places—but what it can’t do is replace lost volume.
Injectable fillers are a popular addition to facelifts, as they replace lost volume and provide a more contoured structure to areas of the face such as the lips, under-eye hollows, cheeks, and chin.
