While some degree of hair loss is a typical part of the aging process, it is far from an easy concept to accept. A person’s hair is more than just something at the top of their head. It is a part of their identity, styled to match their personality. A full head of hair is a symbol of health, youth, and beauty, and the gradual thinning or loss of hair is a deeply emotional and overwhelming process.

Hair loss affects both men and women and can be the result of many factors, including aging, hormonal changes, and genetics. Hair transplantation is a surgical approach to hair restoration for patients who hope to regain fuller, thicker, and healthier hair.

What Can Hair Transplantation Treat?

A Receding Hairline

A receding hairline is often one of the first signs of hair loss. This is characterized by the loss of hair above the temples that continues to extend up and back toward the top of the head.

A receding hairline is often a result of genetics or excess stress and can start as soon as one reaches puberty.

A Balding Crown

Male pattern baldness starts with the receding of the hairline and worsens to include hair loss on the crown (the top of the head).

While this condition often begins with the thinning of the area, it can worsen to become a complete bald patch.

A Widening Part

Many women who begin to notice the thinning of their hair suffer from female pattern baldness, which is characterized by the widening of the natural part.

Whereas many individuals who suffer from male pattern baldness develop a receding hairline or hair loss at the top of their heads, women who are suffering from female pattern baldness experience thinning throughout the scalp.

What Are My Options for Hair Transplantation?

Depending on the severity and causes of your hair loss, multiple hair transplant techniques are available to improve your appearance and restore a fuller and thicker hairline.

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)

The follicular unit transplantation (FUT) method, which is more commonly known as the “strip” method, recreates a natural hair pattern in the balding or thinning region. Since this technique can transplant a large number of grafts in a single session, it is ideal for individuals with a significant amount of balding.

  1. Local anesthesia is administered for safety and comfort.
  2. The hair at the back of the scalp is cut short within the donor area; however, the surrounding area is not trimmed.
  3. The designated donor area is surgically excised, and the incision is closed with stitches or surgical clips.
  4. The excised part of the scalp is divided into sections, and grafts are separated into units of one to four hairs using sharp blades.
  5. Hundreds of tiny incisions will be made at the recipient sites that match the exact number of grafts to be transplanted.
  6. The grafts are placed into the sites using microforceps. Single hairs are placed in the front to recreate a natural-appearing hairline, and the remaining larger grafts are placed behind the hairline to provide greater density and thickness.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)

The follicular unit extraction (FUE) method recreates a natural hair pattern in the patient’s balding or thinning areas.

  1. Local anesthesia is administered for your comfort and safety.
  2. The entire back of the scalp and above the ears are shaved to the skin’s surface.
  3. Each follicular unit is removed with the assistance of a handheld device that removes grafts with a uniform diameter of one millimeter.
  4. The hairline and recipient sites are created by making hundreds of tiny incisions matching the number of grafts to be transplanted.
  5. The grafts are placed into the sites using microforceps. Single hairs are placed in the front to recreate a natural-appearing hairline, and the remaining larger grafts are placed behind the hairline for greater density and thickness.

This technique does not require stitches or surgical clips; however, less hair can be removed in a single session compared to the strip method.

Eyebrow Hair Transplantation

Eyebrow hair transplantation benefits men and women who have lost definition in their brows due to genetics, aging, or trauma.

  1. Local anesthesia is administered to ensure a painless process.
  2. Either the strip harvesting (FUT) or follicular unit extraction (FUE) method can be utilized.
  3. The donor hair is taken from the back of the scalp.
  4. Individual hair follicles are transplanted one by one to the eyebrow area.
  5. Our surgeons will meticulously place the transplanted hair follicles so that the hair lies flat against the bony brow and grows in the proper direction.
  6. It may take up to 400 single hair grafts to fully replace one eyebrow.

Because the donor hair is taken from the scalp, the hair will take on the growth characteristics of scalp hair and require trimming about one to two times a week.

Facial Hair Transplantation

Men who wish to improve the thickness of their patchy or thin mustache and/or beards may benefit from facial hair transplantation.

  1. Local anesthesia is administered to ensure a painless process.
  2. Either the strip harvesting (FUT) or follicular unit extraction (FUE) method can be applied.
  3. The donor hair is taken from the back of the scalp and meticulously placed in the beard and mustache region.

Because the donor hair is taken from the scalp, the hair will take on the growth characteristics of scalp hair and require usual facial hair maintenance.

What Are Your Concerns About Hair Transplantation?

How Long Does It Take to Recover From Hair Transplant Treatment?

There are multiple factors that affect how quickly you can return to your regular routine, such as the type of hair placement surgery and the complexity of that treatment.

Immediately After

It is common to develop tenderness and small bumps on the scalp in the hours and days following your hair transplantation. Your hair can be rinsed gently with water on the first postoperative day. Gentle shampooing can begin three days after the procedure.

We recommend using a very mild, non-medicated shampoo for the first few weeks.

One to Two Weeks

You will need to avoid wearing any wigs or hairpieces for at least two weeks after your hair transplantation surgery. You can expect to take several days off from work and your normal, light activities. Stitches or surgical clips are usually removed after 10 days.

Three to Four Months

You should expect the hair contained within the grafts to fall out soon after the procedure. New hair growth is usually established over the next three to four months.

Will There Be Scars After My Hair Transplantation?

Scarring following your hair transplant will depend on the method used during your procedure. If you underwent the strip method of hair transplantation, you could expect to develop a scar along the incision site where the donor graft was taken. This scar will fade with time and will be covered by your natural hair growth.

How Much Does Hair Transplantation Cost?

Several hair transplantation techniques are available at the Diamond Face Institute, and the selection of this will affect your treatment’s overall cost. The total price of your hair transplant will depend on the technique chosen, the price per hair graft, surgeon’s fees, operating room fees, anesthesia fees, medical tests, and post-surgical appointments.

Dr. Diamond will provide you with an accurate cost estimate once he has had a chance to evaluate your needs. We offer financing options through CareCredit®.

If your hair loss was caused by burns or trauma, your hair transplant surgery might be regarded as a reconstructive treatment, and part or all of your treatment may be covered by health insurance.

Is There Pain Involved With Hair Transplantation?

Many hair transplantation patients develop some mild discomfort and tenderness in the scalp as it heals; however, most patients describe this pain as being very manageable. Patients can alleviate any discomfort with prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication.

Frequently Asked Questions About Hair Transplantation

Q: Am I a candidate for hair transplantation?

A: Hair transplantation can benefit both men and women who wish to restore fullness to their hair. Since hair is being transplanted with these techniques, candidates must have healthy hair growth at the back and sides of the head that will serve as donor areas (places on the head where the grafts are taken).

Candidates for hair transplantation:

  • Are in good overall health
  • Have no medical causes of hair loss
  • Are realistic about their expectations

Additional factors that may be taken into account will include hair color and texture (such as waviness or curliness), as this may affect the overall aesthetic.

Q: What is discussed during my hair transplant consultation?

A: During your consultation, one of our expert hair transplantation surgeons will guide you through the transplantation process and determine which method will deliver your desired results. Because hair transplantation requires a donor graft, the location of your donor hair will be determined during this meeting. Your consultation will also give you a chance to ask your surgeon any questions that you may have about the process.

Q: When will I see the results of my hair transplantation?

A: While you can expect significant and successful results following your hair transplantation, these results will not appear overnight. It will take three to four months for the hair transplant to take effect. This may seem disheartening, especially because the transplanted hairs will fall out initially; however, you need to remember that this is the expected process. Once your new hair starts to regrow, you can usually anticipate a half-inch growth per month.

Q: Is there a non-surgical alternative to hair transplantation?

A: While hair transplants are the most assured way to achieve hair restoration for thinning or balding hair, Diamond InstaMane provides a non-surgical hair rejuvenation approach. This three-step process removes dead skin cells that clog the hair follicle pores, applies PRP with additive proteins, and uses laser helmet therapy to regenerate hair growth.

Q: Will my hair transplant results be permanent?

A: The longevity of your hair transplantation results will depend on the degree and cause of your hair loss. Some patients require additional surgeries to achieve optimal, long-lasting results. If you do require multiple procedures, you will be required to stagger your treatments as it takes several months for you to heal between surgeries.
